Yıldız Technical University Lagari UAV Team placed 3rd in the general category of the 17th AUVSI SUAS taking place in Maryland, the USA, 2019, which is an international unmanned aerial vehicle and autonomous flight competition, and which is sponsored by the US Army, Lockheed Martin, Google Rockwell, Boeing and Mathworks. Outdistancing well-known universities such as Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, UCLA, Penn State, and Virginia Tech; Lagari Team placed 1st in the fixed-wing category among 75 teams for the autonomous take-off and landing missions, target shooting and object detection and placed 3rd in the general category. Sponsored by Yıldız Technical University, Yıldız Technopark, Yıldız Technology Transfer Office, Baykar Makina, T3 Foundation, TAI, Roketsan, Turkish Airlines, Ordulu, BLG and BLS; Lagari Team is composed of 8 sophomores, juniors and seniors from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and 2 students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and 2 students from the Control and Automation Engineering Department of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, which are 12 students in total. Supervised by the advising faculty member of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Dr. Faculty Member Ahmet KIRLI and piloted by the Alumnus (Class of 2014) of YTU from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, Tolgahan AKBULUT, Lagari Team carried out their design of the fixed-wing autonomous UAV and its manufacturing procedures at the workshops of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering and Baykar Makina.
